Childhood Brainwashing (To Eat Healthy)

June 27, 2012

They told us to eat apples and bananas.

“Eat them everyday”. They sad. “They’ll keep the doctor away”. They said.

And then we met Cookie Monster. And everything changed.

The messages that we learn in childhood are incredibly powerful. They sink in and they sink in deep.

One message that I absorbed as a child (although I’m not sure from where) is that if it’s delicious and I want to eat it, then it’s probably not good for me and I shouldn’t be eating it.

But that is absolutely not true. I don’t have to chose between health and taste. I can have both. And I absolutely refuse to eat things that I don’t like just because they’re supposed to be “healthy”. You can’t make me.

What kind of messages around food did you absorb as a child?

About the Author ()

Lillian's Test Kitchen is an online cooking web series. The recipes in this series are always grain-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and cane sugar-free. The recipes are also all (at this point) paleo. Some are vegan. Some are raw. I use the best ingredients I can find (and afford). But Lillian's Test Kitchen is not so much about food as it is about the experience of trying something you have never tried before and then finding the joy, comedy and laughter in those small moments in spite of and also often, because of dietary restrictions. My goal is to inspire others to take their health into their own hands and make their own food.

Hmm, as a kid, I was taught NEVER to waste food. And never complain about what was served. As a very non-picky adult who always cleans her plate, it’s clear those messages stuck with me.

I’m happily humming to myself “A wait tait ait eight aiples and banaynays” “A weet teet eet, eet eeples and baneenees”.

Wanna sing a round with me? How about “Row, Row, Row your boat”? I’ll start…

Thanks for letting me dork out over kid songs! And now I’m awaiting your Every Single Day Cookies recipe…. cuz I’m also a cookie monster kid. Nom Nom Nom !!

I’ll sing a round with you. I used to love doing ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat’ as a round. Gotta love those natural harmonies…
